Liberation is a very nice word, expresses one of the most important aspect of the life for a human being. But what does it means to be liberated! It means that we can go wherever we want? to say or think whatever we want? To wish whatever we want? Or to protest? Is this the meaning of word liberation? Sure it is, but there is something more deep that this word expresses.

Exodus 32

1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”2 Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.”3  So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods,[b] Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” 6  So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

The story of the gold calf is really a great example of human behavior. After liberating the people of Israel from the rule of egyptians, Moses went on the mountain to receive the tablets of the covenant from the new god that the israely people were waiting. During the waiting the people of Israel felt abandoned, because their guide had left them alone. But most of all they felt  uncomfortable because they found themselves in a new situation, that of freedom. To become suddenly free is not something easy to sustain, mostly for those who have not yet found themselves, for those who have not yet found their true identity freedom it’s like emptiness like to be lost. Because of this emptiness emerged in the people of israel the urgent need of new reference a new god, and so they asked Aaron an idol to be workshiped: the golden calf. In this interpretation of the biblical history: what the israelites could find in themselves as a people or in the soul as individuals, they sought it outward by projecting it into an idol, and then of this new idol they would become again slaves. To be free is to find in ourself the source of the life the key of the life, to be free it is to be very close to our deep true nature. liberation it could means to reach what we really are, liberated from all the chains that kept us far from our real center. These chains are in ourself  in our mind, in our subconscious. In India they are called “vasana” and this is what conditions us, and being conditioned does not allow us to meet our real self. The conditioning are very hard chains to melt, because they come from our family of origin, from society, from religion, from politics, from the past, from the unconscious. And until we realize the deception we will be identified with these conditions by believing that we are those conditionings. So renouncing the conditioning will mean giving up what we believe that we are. Liberation is the highest state attainable by a conscious being, a liberated being is a being who no longer has constraints, no pressure from the unconscious life a liberated individual lives only a state of calm_present, here and now that includes the universe.
